Why Jasprit Bumrah Is in a Category of His Own Right Now

I have been watching Indian cricket seriously for most of my adult life. I have seen genuinely great fast bowlers in that time — Zaheer at his best, Ishant in England, Shami on good days. But Bumrah is something I have not seen before in Indian cricket, and I think those of us watching him now do not fully appreciate how unusual what he does actually is.

What Makes Him Different to Watch

The first thing you notice about Bumrah — before the wickets, before the statistics — is that when he comes on to bowl, the atmosphere in the ground changes. Batters who have been playing confidently suddenly look uncertain. Captains who have been attacking suddenly become cautious. The whole dynamic of a passage of play shifts the moment he starts his run-up. Very few bowlers in cricket history have had that effect, and even fewer fast bowlers in the modern era.

His action is completely unorthodox. Coaching manuals cannot easily describe what he does or how to counter it because no template for it exists. That makes him extraordinarily difficult to prepare for — and difficult to face when you have not figured out the preparation either.

The Numbers Tell the Story

His bowling average across all three formats places him among the elite of his generation. What makes those numbers particularly impressive is the context — the best batting lineups, the highest pressure situations, conditions that have not always suited him. He takes wickets everywhere, not just at home on helpful pitches.

The true measure of a great bowler is not how they perform when everything is in their favour. It is what they produce when the pitch is flat, the batters are set, and the match is on the line. By that measure, Bumrah has no equal in world cricket right now.

That Yorker

His yorker is the best delivery in world cricket. When a batter needs to score in the final over of a T20 match and Bumrah produces that yorker — perfectly placed, at genuine pace, after a delivery that set it up — it is almost impossible to deal with. World-class batters who handle other bowlers' yorkers comfortably look genuinely helpless against his. I have watched it happen enough times now that it never stops being remarkable.

What He Means for Indian Cricket

India has always had great batters. The idea that India could produce the undisputed best fast bowler in the world at any given moment was less established when I started following cricket seriously. Bumrah has permanently changed that perception. Future generations of Indian fast bowling will grow up knowing that the ceiling is higher than anyone previously imagined.
